Op. 50 L.A. STORIES

a. PRELUDE - This Why I Wonder

Ay-yi-yi-yi
This why I wonder
My song to be
I wish I were
My song to be
I wish I wish I wonder
I wonder why it will not come to me

1. SAN FERNANDO HUB

I. Fresno

Fresno!
Fresno! You're truck's fillin' up
Lancaster!
Put a raincoat on Mojave
Who forgot about Ridgecrest?

II. Explosives

Don't load explosives
It happened to me just the other day
The super said
ABC
Nitroglycerine
ABC
Dynamite and rockets
ABC
Grenades and flares

III. The Hell Out of Here

Break time! Break time!
This hub's goin' down in ten minutes
If you just happen to meet
Anybody down there who is working on the belt
They're likely to say
Watch out for mis-sorts
Bishop has gotta go
Let's get the hell out of here

b. INTERLUDE - Bozos and Ozone

Bozos and Ozone
Mr. Bush Zone and Ozone
Mr. Bush there you go again
There you go again Jack Kennedy
You're no Jack Kennedy
My dog Millie knows about more
Economics than these two
Bozos and Ozone Man
Mr. Bush Zone and Ozone Man

2. BUSINESS AS USUAL

IA. Torculus Man

Dot Dot
Stroke Stroke
He worked out everything just like a big equation
Clivus Podatus
He worked on difficult neumatical notation
Virgum Punctum
His students pondered out the knotty situation
Scandicus Climatus
They're each assigned a neume for total compilation
Porectus Torculus
I knew one
He was a Torculus Man

IB. Six Friday Nights

Went downstairs
Snuck some wine
Six Friday nights in the back end of a bottle
Wasted
You know we really were

IC. The Second Death

The Second Death is when
Everyone you know has died

IIA. Caucasian Sketchbook

Have you
Any other reason for wanting to work here
Other than your liking for beer?
We support our troops in the Gulf
Achtung! David Duke!

IIB. Business as Usual

To transform the world
To amplify the voices
That are rendered voiceless
By the dominant society
To inscribe with them
Their words and wisdom creating
Written records and then
Reading
Their words with one another
To provide a stage where
Women
Men and childen the elderly disenfranchised minorities and
Communities become protagonists in their own life
Stories
These are the intentions of participatory research
More than a methodology
Participatory research is a committed dialogue
For service and action among researchers and their communities
Researchers and communities
Come together in a mutual and
Rigorous exploration of their lives
Deeply respecting each other's ability to know
Believing that through the act of knowing
We can transform our
Reality

IIC. Information Wanted

Who decides a look a way you talk
Who decides a look a way you walk
Who decides a look a way you stalk

Information Wanted
$1000 Reward

IIIA. You'll Drive It Out

Look

It's been Friday
Over the weekend
Now it's Tuesday
I think I better have it
Towed somewhere else

No, no, my friend!
You're gonna drive it out!

IIIB. Buttonwillow

It's just a truck
I need a crowbar
Dyin' on an L.A. freeway ain't my [i]dea[l] of havin' fun

SAN FRANCISCO COMPOSERS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA PRESENTS
"MARCH MADNESS"
8:00PM, SATURDAY, MARCH 8, OLD FIRST CHURCH,
1725 SACRAMENTO STREET (AT VAN NESS), SAN FRANCISCO

SAN FRANCISCO AND WORLD PREMIERES OF WORKS BY
ALEXIS ALRICH, MICHAEL COOKE, PHILIP FREIHOFNER,
MARTHA STODDARD, DAN REITER, AND ERLING WOLD

SAN FRANCISCO, February 8, 2007 -- Lunacy. Spaciness. Taking 20 years to write a piece. Thinking that music will save the planet. Having a face in the back of one's head. Suicidal thoughts.
Why do we do what we do? Because we can't do otherwise?
One thing's for sure: it's a crazy world. So come celebrate the craziness with Alexis Alrich, Michael Cooke, Philip Freihofner, Dan Reiter, Martha Stoddard, Erling Wold, and the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra as they present March Madness -- 8pm, Saturday, March 8, at Old First Church, 1725 Sacramento Street, in San Francisco.

Michael Cooke's Sun and Moon is a dizzying take on time and place, with members of the orchestra performing spacilly and spatially at the point-and-click discretion of Music Director Mark Alburger. Martha Stoddard, as Guest Conductor, will take the ensemble even farther out in A Little Trip to Outer Space where reality has lost its bearings.

The entire orchestra will evaporate in the clangor of metal as Philip Freihofner re-invents sanity in The Bell Field, while Dan Reiter's Toccata and Fugue will send minds reeling under the direction of Associate Conductor John Kendall Bailey toward a reckoning with Johann Sebastian Bach.

Farthest afield on earth will be Alexis Alrich's Fragile Forests: II Cambodia, where East and West consciousnesses collide in the loveliest possible manner. And, as a final coup-de-grace Erling Wold will evoke the diabolical in Mordake Suite No. 2, in hint of his mad opera to be premiered later in the year.
